Rare Collector's Piece: Ming Dynasty Huanghuali Wine Side Table Huang Hua Li

About the Item

***SUMMER SALE*** This is an extremely rare and unusual Shanxi province Huanghuali wine table from the mid Ming dynasty. Huanghuali was the most precious Chinese hardwood used during the Ming dynasty to make the most exquisite furniture. Reserved for the wealthy and noble, Huanghuali has been prized for its beauty and rarity. The shape and construction of this table pre-dates the pieces known as “classical” Chinese furniture. The style is more coarse and similar to pieces from the early Ming dynasty, in particular a table excavated from the tomb of Zhu Tan, who died in 1389. The table’s surface and underside are not lacquered. The top frame is made from Huanghuali whilst the inset boards are made from Nanmu. A simple curved apron is the only decoration on this simple table. The front and back have a single stretcher and the sides have double stretchers. The wood has a beautiful patina and shows all the original marks and scratches, which gives it great character. This piece is constructed from the most precious hardwood yet made in a very humble way – a perfect piece of understatement, only recognised by the trained eye.
