About the Item

A set of three stackable nesting sewing boxes covered in colored Hanji paper. Known as Jijang Samhap, these boxes were used in woman's quarter to storage sewing, embroidery and other needlework accoutrements. These boxes were traditionally made with a wood core covered in layers of strong Hanji paper or they were made with many layers of papers, a technique similar to Paper-mâché. The surface paper was always painted brightly in colors/ The set of three boxes on offer here is likely dated to the end of Joseon Dynasty to Korean Empire period (late 19th to early 20th century). They were made of wood and covered with paper painted with bold contrasting green, yellow and red color in geometrical pattern with a tricolor Taegeuk sign in the center flanked by butterflies The Taegeuk sign (which is on the national flag and has become the symbol of Korea) symbolizes the harmony of different forces in the universe. The butterfly is the symbol of happiness, transformation and beauty. The size of the respective box is 11x18.5x5.5; 17.5x9.5x5; and 15x8x4. The boxes are in their original condition displaying evidence of long period use in accordance with the material used. Not restored. For a similar set of sewing boxes see item FE.19:1-1993 in the collection of Victoria and Albert Musuem of Art in London. Also see item 1989.7.45.4 in the collection of Weisman Art Musuem, Minneapolis.
