About the Item

This piece is a cedar chest of drawers or Tansu in Japanese. It is two separate pieces. The most valuable sought after Tansu are those from Sado Island in Japan. The value of a tansu is not only its age and where it was made. It also depends greatly on the hardware. The more hardware, and the more detailed the hardware is, the more value the tansu has. This is one of the most beautiful Tansu we have see in our 40 years dealing art from Asia. This is a lovely example of the best of the best from Sado Island. All drawers are functional. There are metal handles on the sides that you can use to move the piece. Origin Town of Ogi Sado Island Nilgata prefecture, Japan Meiji period circa 1870-1890 It can be used stacked or unstacked as the two are separable. As seen in photo it is presented as a console sideboard hutch with a custom iron handmade stand. It can be taken off the stand and the two can be stacked on top of each other for a chest look. It can also be unstacked and used as bedside tables. 46.5 W x 17.25 D x 45. 5 H is the measurement of each piece. The total width if you use them as a sideboard is 93". Material: Cedar (sufi), paulownia (kiri) iron hardware This is a beautifully constructed two-section clothing chest made of cedar and paulownia. All kiri wood (paulownia) chest are valued in Japan for their resistance to unity and insects. Chests made on Sado Island are known for their large size and hand-forged ironwork this is exemplified on this chest. A chest of this quality was often made as a dowry gift for a newly married couple. The large rectangular shaped lock plates (jomae) are incised with auspicious motifs such as flying cranes (tsuru), kabuki figures, and turtles (kame), and pine (matsu). The very large drawer handles are in the Warabit style (mountain fern) and are backed with incised escutcheons (zagane). Large decorative metal corners continue the incised pine motif and add additional protection for the drawers. The side handles provide easy transport. The chests can be stacked for a chest of drawers, or they can be left as seen as a console. For this console we made a custom iron base made. We can make bases for your tansu, if you choose to separate them for side tables or bedside tables. Or a stand for the re-stacked tansu to become a chest of drawers.
