Makie Paper Lacquered Storage Box Depicting Cranes. This early paper lacquered storage box is a stunning example of Japanese craftsmanship. It is dated to the Edo period, 18th-19th century, and it is in fair condition with some abrasions due to its age. The box is made of paper lacquer, and it is decorated with a beautiful design of cranes. The cranes are depicted in flight, and they are surrounded by clouds and flowers. The design is beautifully executed and a testament to Japanese artisans' skill and artistry. Paper lacquer is a traditional Japanese art form that dates back to the Heian period. It is made by applying layers of paper to a wooden substrate and then coating it with lacquer. The lacquer is then sanded and polished to create a smooth, glossy finish. Paper lacquer is a very durable material, and it is often used to create objects that are meant to last for generations.
