Chinese Carved Cinnabar Red Lacquer Round Dragon Box, Republic Period
$4,800

About
A large Chinese carved red cinnabar lacquer nine dragon cake box, late Republic period, circa 1940.
Exuberantly carved in deep relief with a design nine five clawed dragons dancing above rocky peaks amongst the waves and clouds, the tall, round box is crafted of many layers of red cinnabar lacquer over a light wooden or bamboo base, then carved.
On the top of the box, the central dragon faces forward, his body coiled around a medallion with the character "shou", meaning longevity.
The other eight dragons carved in two rows around the sides of the box, portrayed sideways and facing opposite directions, separated by rocky peaks. Large bands of stylized chrysanthemum with a leiwen (rolling thunder) border above and below.
The interior lacquered a simple black.
The box originally a presentation box housing another gift. Most likely for a major birthday (possibly a 60th birthday), as indicated by the shou medallion.
