About the Item

Kobako in rankuku lacquer, also known as eggshell lacquer in Europe, decorated with peony flowers and a butterfly realized in maki-e lacquer. The butterfly (choho) in Japan, is perceived as "the soul of the living and the dead", the spirits of the dead taking the form of a butterfly on their journey to the other world. The butterfly spreading its wings is also a symbol of femininity. But it can also symbolize joy and longevity. This motif is taken up by the samurai cast, seeing in its twirling figure a motive of good omen allowing them to reach immortality. Whereas peonies are associated with both elegance and wealth, everywhere in Asia their flowers are admired for their grace and beauty. Literally translated kokako means small boxes, most often decorated with harmonious scene of the fauna and flora of the Japanese isles. Based on its form and size, this kobako was possibly used as a Chabako to store the accoutrements for chado (tea ceremony). The lidded box is of rectangular form with bevel design on all edge that softens the appearance. The entire surface was densely covered with a background of nashiji.
