About the Item
An elegant and refined Japanese lacquer koro, incense burner, in the form of a chaire, tea caddy, Edo Perio, mid 19th century, Japan.
The barrel shaped koro formed as a traditional chaire, vessel for holding tea. The exterior of the koro decorated in maki-e lacquer with three bands of geometric brocade designs.
The wide, slightly recessed mouth with a fitted lacquer lid of concave design with a further brocade pattern, and topped with a small knob handle. The interior with a copper lining. The undersides of both the lid and koro decorated in dense and bright nashiji.
The top band of decoration features the hishi diamond pattern with hanabishi blossoms to the center, symbolizing growth and prosperity.
The central band with a sayagata pattern, symbolizing longevity and prosperity.
The lower band of overlapping circles in the shippo pattern with hanabishi blossoms to the center, symbolizing harmony and fulfillment.
The lid with a similar shippo hanabishi pattern.
