About the Item
A fine and elegant Japanese lacquer box for writing implements or stationery, suzuribako, with an image of a Shinto shrine, Edo Period, mid-19th century, circa 1840, Japan.
The exquisite suzuribako features rounded corners and a slightly domed, overhanging lid, kabusebuta-zukuri, with a continuous design from the lid down the sides of the box. The interior and underside a simple black polished lacquer. The interior plain, with no separate sections for an ink stone or brushes.
The lid of the box finely decorated in gold maki-e lacquer using togidashi and nashiji techniques, among others, to depict a stately Shinto shrine surrounded by pine trees amongst a mountainous backdrop. The mountains and part of the shrine partially obscured by an ethereal mist.
The shrine features gorgeous architecture, with its distinctive "X" shaped roof terminals, known as chigi, and gabled columns to the entrance. The presence of the chigi positively identify the building as a Shinto shrine. An ablution pavilion, chozuya, is present in the foreground.
The shrine depicted may be Izumo-Taisha, one of the oldest and most important shrines in Japan. Izumo-Taisha is home to the important and popular kami (Shinto god), Ōkuninushi, the god of matchmaking and marriages.
