About the Item
A large and boldly decorated Japanese lacquer document box, ryoshibako, Showa Period, circa 1960, Japan.
The large rectangular box for storing papers of documents is known as a ryoshibako. This lacquer ryoshibako features a rounded corners and a fitted cover with rimmed edges. The exterior of the box of carved kamakura-bori and maki-e lacquer with a striking design of a large stalk of flowering cockscomb celosia, keito, all against a brown lacquer ground. The design continuing down and around three sides of the box.
The flowering plant known as cockscomb (keito) with lush foliage and distinct blooms. The design of kamakura-bori lacquer, carved in low relief and lacquered with an orange red base, and finished in gold maki-e lacquer. Another spray of cockscomb in full gold maki-e lacquer to the corner.
The overall design highly reminiscent of Art Deco works. The textures and strong lines within the design reminiscent of ukiyo-e woodblock prints.
The interior and underside of the box of simple black lacquer.
