About the Item

An impressive and unusually shaped Japanese lacquered box, bearing the gold crests of the prestigious Tachibana samurai clan. This elegant piece dates to the late Edo to early Meiji period and was part of a rare and extensive dining set associated with the Tachibana household. In the Meiji era, the Tachibana family converted their estate into an elite hotel, and it is likely this box was used to serve honored guests. The design reflects a refined blend of traditional Japanese aesthetics with subtle influences of early Western (Art Deco) geometry. The deep black lacquer finish contrasts beautifully with the hand-applied gold family crests, or mon, creating a sophisticated and historically rich object. A rare example of functional lacquerware with noble provenance, ideal for collectors of Japanese art and design. • Origin: Japan • Period: Late Edo – Meiji period, 19th century • Material: Lacquered wood with gold maki-e clan crests • Dimensions: 31.5 × 31.5 cm (12.5 × 12.5 in); Height: 15.5 cm (6 in) • Weight: 1800 g (4 lb) • Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear consistent with age ⸻ Shipping & Customs International buyers – please note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. Exquisite Japanese Lacquer Maki-e Hand Box Kobako Edo Period
Located in Atlanta, GA
An early Japanese lacquer Maki-e decorated kobako (small storage box) circa 18th century (Edo period). Based on its form and size, this kobako was possibly used as a Chabako to store the accoutrements for chado (tea ceremony). The lidded box is of rectangular form with bevel design on all edge that softens the appearance. The entire surface was densely covered with a background of nashiji. Elaborate Maki-e techniques were used on each side to showcase a distinct landscape or floral design within a cartouche panel. On the surface of the lid, a mountainous landscape rises from the edge of the water. The poetic composition is akin to a traditional ink scroll...
