Burmese 18th Century Cast Bronze Buddhist Temple Bell Bracket with Elephant
About the Item
A one of a kind bronze Burmese temple bell bracket top from the 18th century or earlier depicting an elephant standing above celestial beings. Created in Burma during the 18th century or at an even earlier time, this bronze artifact is the top of a Buddhist temple bell that was used to call monks to eat or meditate. According to Bennett, the offering of a bronze bell to a monastery or a temple was considered as an act of merit (kutho, defined as a wholesome action) and casting of such bells was auspicious. Our bronze bell bracket showcases an elephant surrounding by celestial beings. The bell itself would have been secured through the metal rod that passes through the holes. Boasting a nicely weathered appearance revealing its age and use, this item will need to be mounted on a custom-made base (the one shown in the images was for photography purposes). With its great presence and fine depiction, this 18th century or earlier Burmese temple bell bracket will make for an exquisite decorative addition to any home.
