Capital Chinese bronze figure of a standing bodhisattva Guanyin
About the Item
Impressive, capital Chinese bronze figure of a standing bodhisattva Guanyin, revered as the Goddess of Mercy, also recognized as Avalokiteshvara or Kannon. The figure is masterfully crafted as a single piece from dark brown patinated bronze, with her flowing robe exquisitely adorned with gilded scrolling foliage.
Her meticulous updo is elegantly veiled by a gently draped cloth. Guanyin's expression is one of profound tranquillity and meditation, her gaze cast downwards. The robe, luxuriously loose, parts slightly at the chest to reveal a double-string necklace, and appears to be softly billowing, as if caressed by a gentle breeze.
The back of the figure features a circle adorned with a depiction of a pair of mandarin ducks, and at the base, an inscription with a six-character reign mark indicating it was "Made in the Wanli era of the Ming dynasty".
In her left hand, Guanyin holds a -removable- vase from which pure water flows, symbolizing relief from suffering and illness. Her other hand forms the shuni mudra, also known as ‘the seal of patience’. The figure is elegantly poised on a double lotus throne, itself resting on a hexagonal base.
