About
A rare Chinese repousse bronze (copper alloy) lotus jar, Yuan Dynasty (1270-1368), Yunnan, China.
The offering vessel of globular form, with a wide, rounded body and a hinged lid. The body of the jar decorated with a series of large and bold overlapping lotus petals. The lid with an eight pointed star yantra centered around a large nipple representing the sacred Mt. Meru.
Originally used as an offering vessel to house sutras or dedications, this type of vessel was popular in southwest China from the 10th-16th centuries. Most often they are found in pottery. Bronze vessels of this type are rare.
The exterior of jar covered with an overall dark green patina. The interior with a more complex, lighter green patina with heavy mineral encrustation to the interior of the lid, and remnants of fabric and paper to the bottom.
