Fine Large Ancient Chinese Painted Pottery Horse, Tang Dynasty, 618 CE- 907 CE

About the Item

China, a fine ancient handmade and hand painted pottery horse, terracotta, measuring 45cm, 18 inches high and 45cm, 18 inches length and 20cm, 8 inches width, Tang dynasty (618 CE- 907 CE). A large 18 inch tall and beautiful example. The vigorous and powerful steed standing four square and with pricked ears, delineated mane, well defined saddle and sweeping saddle ornament, eyes, nose, cropped tail, open jaw with a smooth backside and legs restored and exhibiting varying degrees of remnant vermilion and white poly chrome. A Thermoluminescence test (TL test) certificate No. 20K300316 which accompanies this horse authenticates its genuine age from China's Tang dynasty. (photo) Provenance: Old New York Collection acquired in the 1990s History: History indicates that the first domesticated horses originated in the Eurasion steppes about 4000 BCE and were known in China some one thousand years later. China’s ancient appetite for horses caused Han emperor Wudi to dispatch Zhang Qian to the Central Asian Kingdom of Ferghana (Persia) to seek larger and more powerful horses than the conventional Mongolian pony. It was approximately at this time that Zhang described them as heavenly horses (tianma) and Devine horses (shenma) thereby causing Wudi to dispatch General Li Guangli to secure a supply of these increasingly valuable assets. In opening up the silk road, east-west trading began in earnest, and silk was offered for horses! By the Tang dynasty, large parts of Central Asia had been conquered, trading flourished, and exotic goods procurement including horse supply was ensured. China, a monumental pair (2) of 500 year old lime stone “Spirit Path” Equine horse head sculptures. Ming dynasty, (1368-1644 CE). A pair of near life size and robust head sections with fine, wavy combed manes, well defined mouths, ears, nostrils, and ornamental bridles, all carved in a medium to dark gray limestone with considerable weathering to surfaces. The smaller head with a later inscription on bottom and signed “Zhuang”. Formerly exhibited “Treasures from Asia”, Shelburne Vermont, Shelburne Art Center, 2006. Originally found in the vicinity of the village of Chuan near Luoyang City, Henan Provance, China. Each mounted on a custom iron display stand.
