Contemporary Hand-Painted Japanese Screen of Cranes by the River
About the Item
The cranes by the river painting of this two-panel screen is hand-painted in watercolor, on squares of gold leaf which are applied by hand to the paper base over carefully jointed wooden lattice frames. Lacquer wooden rails are then applied to the perimeter to finish the edges of the screen and provide support.
Traditional folding screens from Japan, known as Byobu. Literally “protection from wind”, were originally developed to be used as dividers both indoors and outdoors, the zigzag construction allowing them to be either free-standing or wall-mounted.
