Japanese Screen White Chrysanthemums and Wild Grasses. Chrysanthemums, or kiku, are the official symbol of imperial Japan. The flower is also a symbol of national identity. White chrysanthemums are thought to be particularly good luck, and here they are placed within a graceful rhythm of arching grasses. Edo period painting (c. 1850) in mineral pigments on heavy gold leaf with a silk brocade border.
