About the Item

Pair of byobu or folding screens in two panels, painted on gold washed paper in gofun or powdered clam shell and sumi ink with a winter scene of magpies under snow-covered pines. Signed on the lower right side of the right-hand screen by the artist: Kibo and sealed twice: Kodama Shozo and then below this: Kibo; and on the lower left side of the left-hand screen sealed twice: Kodama Shozo and then below this: Kibo (Kodama Kibo, the go or art name of Kodama Shozo, 1898 – 1971). Early Showa era, 1926 – 1936. With the original wood storage box, with a paulownia wood panel inscribed: Secchü Kasasagi, Kibo Dai or Magpies in the Snow, Titled by Kibo, and sealed: Kibo. Born in Hiroshima, Kodama Kibo studied painting under Kawai Gyokudo. One of Gyokudo’s best students, Kibo first exhibited at the Imperial art exhibitions with the 3rd Teiten in 1921. Thereafter, he returned to the national exhibition almost every year, showing at the 4th – 12th Teiten, the Bunten Kansaten in 1936, the 2nd – 3rd Shin-Bunten in 1938 – 1939, the Hoshukuten in 1940, the 4th – 5th Shin-Bunten in 1941 – 1942, and the Senji Tokubetsuten in 1944. After the Pacific War, he returned to the national exhibitions with the 2nd Nitten in the autumn of 1946, continuing to show at that venue (with the exception of the 5th and 9th Nitten) through the 12th Nitten. Kibo’s 11th Teiten painting in 1930 won the tokusen or grand prize. A member of the Japan Art Academy, he won the Geijutsu-in prize in 1952. His work is in the collection of the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art. With these paintings, Kodama Kibo frames the composition of the darting and swirling magpies with an over-arching diagonal of the motionless pines. Soft billowing snow on the branches contrasts with the sharply drawn pine needles, the white of the gofun with the black of the sumi ink. Extremely delicate brushwork shades the feathers of the birds, making use of the underlying gold to lighten the delicate edges of the wings. 64 ½” high x 64” wide, each screen when opened flat.
