Ryonosuke Fukui (1923-1986) was a prominent western-style painter during the Showa period in Japan. He was born on December 15th, 1923, in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, where he spent most of his life.
Fukui attended the Tokyo National University of fine Arts and Music, majoring in metalworking and graduating in 1944. His passion for painting, however, led him to study oil painting during his junior high school years.
After the war, Fukui taught arts and crafts in Iwate Prefecture, where he was evacuated. Later on, he moved back to Tokyo at the age of 29 to pursue his artistic career. In 1953, Fukui's oil paintings were selected for the Free Artists' Association Exhibition, marking the beginning of his recognition in the art world.
In 1959, Fukui held his first stencil printmaking exhibition, showcasing his diverse motifs, including snow scenes, still life, and women. Throughout his career, he remained unaffiliated with any art movement, and his works were highly sought after.
Fukui's notable pieces include "Winter in Michinoku" and "Study of Life and Death, Love." In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the art world, Fukui was awarded the Hitoshi Hasegawa Award in 1985. He passed away on July 9th, 1986, leaving behind a legacy of innovative and captivating artwork.
