Pair of 19th Century Black Lacquered Chinese Scholar Shelves

About the Item

This beautiful pair of unusual Chinese scholar shelves is finely crafted with Chinese Northern Elmwood and finished with a black lacquer. The wood is jointed together with Chinese traditional joinery which uses no glue or nails. The insides of the shelves are lacquered finish in an oxblood color. The pair of shelves were originally used to display porcelain and other objects in a traditional Chinese scholar’s room. The identical 3 level shelves are fronted with traditional window and doors shapes from a Chinese garden. The age of the piece has produced a beautiful patina.
