Antique Chinese Color Glass Overlay Snuff Bottle Bats Yellow Snowstorm Qing 19c

About the Item

This fine Qing period antique snuff bottle is a beautiful example of color glass overlay craftsmanship. It features a vibrant yellow snow storm ground, over which dark blue glass has been overlaid to create a striking design. The central motif on each side of the bottle is a coin, surrounded by four flying bats. The use of bats and coins together is highly symbolic in Chinese culture. Bats are homophones for "fortune" or "blessings" (福, fu) in Chinese, and when depicted in art, they are often used to convey wishes for good fortune. The number four is significant as well because it represents completeness and all-around good luck. Therefore, four bats symbolize an abundance of good fortune. The coin is a traditional symbol of wealth and prosperity. In combination with the bats, the imagery suggests the wish for wealth to come from all directions. The dark blue overlay provides a striking contrast against the yellow background, making the symbols stand out prominently. This snuff bottle, with its intricate overlay technique and auspicious symbolism, would have been a treasured item, likely used or given as a gift to convey good wishes. The craftsmanship and symbolism reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Qing period, making it a valuable piece for collectors and admirers of Chinese art and history. The stopper is a half cut bead, likely from a "chaozhu" court necklace, with a jadeite spacer. circa: 19th Century, Qing Dynasty,
