Chinese Carved Jadeite Boulder Grotto on Hardwood Stand, 20th Century, China

About the Item

A fine Chinese carved grayish white and green jadeite (fei cui) boulder with a mountain and grotto scene, presented on a fitted carved nanmu hardwood stand, mid to late 20th century, China. The boulder is comprised of a single large and dense specimen of jadeite (fei cui) of overall pale gray to white, with an attractive vein of bright green. The boulder is carved and pierced with a mountain grotto scene, and features a nice polish. In the foreground, a small boat carries a learned sage and his disciple through crashing waves to a grotto sheltered by a gnarled pine tree and a stand of tall bamboo. Behind them, craggy peaks rise to form a high range dotted with a mountain retreat to one side, and pagoda roofed pavilions to the front and back. A flock of cranes fly in a V formation across the tops of the peaks. The carved jade boulder is presented on a hand carved and fitted hardwood stand of prized nanmu. The heavily carved stand features several of the same motifs as the boulder, including pine trees and crashing waves. Lingzhi, the fungus of immortality, is also present. An inscription in ink to the top. The boulder and stand feature images related to longevity and immortality. In Chinese culture, the pine tree, crane, and lingzhi fungus are all symbols of long life. The boulder displays evidence of both hand and machine carving. The stand is hand carved.
