Chinese Carved Malachite Scholar’s Brush Washer in the Form of a Turtle

About the Item

Chinese Carved Malachite Scholar’s Brush Washer in the Form of a Lotus Leaf, 20th Century A finely hand-carved Chinese scholar’s brush washer, executed in richly banded natural malachite, dating to the 20th century. Carved from a single solid specimen, the vessel displays deep green botryoidal patterning with striking concentric banding—hallmarks of high-quality malachite sourced from the Democratic Republic of Congo, which was historically traded into China. A refined Chinese scholar’s brush washer, meticulously carved from solid natural malachite in the form of a stylized lotus leaf, This elegant object reflects the Qing and Republic-era tradition of scholar’s studio furnishings, where functional tools were often elevated into meditative, symbolic works of art. The undulating, asymmetrical edges and subtle vein-like ridges evoke the soft curvature and surface texture of a floating lotus leaf. The shallow central basin, polished to a soft gloss, is ringed by beautifully patterned malachite with vivid concentric banding in deep emerald and forest green tones. The base reveals natural botryoidal growth, further affirming its hand-carved origin from a single malachite nodule. In Chinese symbolism, the lotus represents purity of mind, transcendence, and spiritual awakening—qualities revered by scholars and poets. Its growth from muddy waters into a perfect bloom made it a favored motif in calligraphy, painting, and meditation objects. Traditionally used for rinsing ink brushes, this piece is both a functional implement and a contemplative object, ideal for collectors of scholar’s objects, scholar’s rocks, or fine Chinese hardstone carvings.
