A Chinese Zitan Scholar's Tray
About the Item
A tray such as this would have graced the desk of a scholar, holding his stationary supplies, such as a brushpot, brushes, water dropper and ink stone.
Zitan, (lit. purple sandalwood) is an extremely dense and finely grained tropical hardwood. The timber is so dense that it sinks in water. Zitan is considered the premier material for classical Chinese furniture and woodworking.
