Meiji Era Ceramic Inkwell with Hand Painted Geisha Motif

About the Item

For sale is a small inkwell from the Japanese Meiji era. It was hand-made around the turn of the 19th/20th century out of Satsuma clay. Satsuma ware (???, Satsuma-yaki) is a type of Japanese pottery originally from Satsuma Province, southern Kyushu. The lid has been painted with two geishas and a little boy in traditional clothing. The scene is surrounded by gold coloured ornament and beautiful blossoms. Inside the inkwell there is a pair of blue and pink chrysanthemums. The object is in excellent condition. Measurements: Height: 1.5cm Diameter: 4.7cm
