Vintage Chinese Glass Overlay Snuff Bottle White Qilin on Yellow Ground mid 20c

About the Item

This mid 20th-century Chinese glass overlay snuff bottle is a fine example of the intricate overlay technique. The bottle, of tapered rectangular form, features a captivating design with two Qilins (Kirin), a mythical Chinese creature, depicted in ivory glass overlay on a contrasting yellow ground. The choice of Qilins as the central motif adds a layer of auspicious symbolism to the bottle, as these creatures are traditionally associated with good luck, prosperity, and serenity. The shoulders and the area above the footring of the bottle are adorned with overlay decorations of lappets, adding an elegant and traditional aesthetic to the design. These lappets provide a decorative border that frames the main imagery and enhances the overall visual appeal of the bottle. Additionally, the bottle features two bordered two-character texts in relief: 歡天 (Huan Tian: rejoice in heaven ) and 喜地 (Xi Di: happiness on earth). These phrases can be interpreted as expressions of joy and celebration, resonating with the auspicious nature of the Qilin (Kirin) imagery. The text, skillfully incorporated into the design, adds a layer of depth and cultural significance. circa: 1950, mid 20th century, 5/6/7 period
