Antique Balinese Calendar, Palelintangan, Kamasan, Bali, early 20th century

About the Item

Antique Balinese Calendar, Palelintangan, Kamasan, Bali, early 20th century, known as "tabing plintangan", a large rectangular plain weave natural cotton cloth dipped in rice paste and painted in polychrome tints. The cloth is painted with a grid in 7 columns by 7 rows bordered in multicolored chevrons. The compartments of the grid contain images of the gods, spirits, animals and various narratives that represent different human attributes. The fabric is in two horizontal sections stitched together between the second and third row. Textile laid down, thick wooden frame with gold leafed front edge and acrylic glazing. The textile size unframed is 53.5 inches high x 64.5 inches wide.
