Antique Chinese Shoushan Stone Tianhuang Carving Sage Immortal Pixiu Qing 19c
About the Item
This exceptional Chinese Shoushan stone carving is a fine example of Qing artistry and craftsmanship, featuring a Sage in a semi-seated position with a playful Pixiu beast. The head section of the carving is particularly noteworthy, exhibiting high-grade field yellow "Tianhuang" attributes, a material highly revered in Chinese art for its rarity and beauty.
The immortal Sage is intricately carved, holding a Pixiu beast in one hand as it whispers into his ear—a scene rich in symbolism and narrative depth. The Pixiu, a mythical creature, is often depicted as a symbol for wealth, good fortune, and protection. It is believed to be loyal to its owner and protects them from harm and wards off evil spirits, adding layers of meaning to this exquisite piece.
The Sage is impeccably dressed in a detailed robe, intricately accented with incised and ink filled medallions, ribbons and decorations, showcasing the carver's meticulous attention to detail. The robe itself is a marvel of craftsmanship, its intricate details serving as a testament to the skill involved in its creation.
Adding to its provenance, a two-character mark is carefully inscribed on the back of the carving. The piece is accompanied by a fitted box and a ribbon-accented stand, enhancing its presentation and collectibility.
This Shoushan stone Sage is a sublime amalgamation of artistic mastery, material excellence, and symbolic depth, making it a distinguished addition to any collection of fine Chinese art.

- China Antique Qing Monumental Buddhist Stone PagodaLocated in South Burlington, VTChina antique monumental Pagoda Shrine with carved Lohans, 115" high, red sandstone, eight sections, Qing dynasty (1644-1911) This stone pagoda is a monumental work of art seldom seen in the west. Pagodas evolved from Indian stupas which were originally designed to hold the Buddha’s relics and textual paper sutras. This tiered tower composition became popular all over Asia and its architectural form differed from region to region. In China, its origins date to Buddhist missionaries who traveled the Silk Road. Early examples were built in temples but by the 13th century they were found outside the temple complex. Oldest examples had simple round or square bases and then later octagonal or more stylistic forms like the “censer” type of base on this pagoda. The 18 Arhats (lohans) portray Buddha’s messengers and each Lohan cylindrical tier is unique. This tour de force could serve as the centerpiece in the finest indoor space, or private or public Chinese or Asian inspired garden or Buddhist art collection. Photographs taken in natural light. Provenance: Private New England Collection acquired in 2005 in China from private collection Cheng Du, Sichuan Province. About Pagodas: Chinese pagoda towers...Category
