Antique Chinese Soapstone Carving of a Crane and Lotus Flowers
About the Item
What a unique and unforgettable Valentine's Day gift this would make!
This rare and very finely carved Art Nouveau-style sculpture depicts a crane with its foot raised on a lotus bud with its head turned backward. Surrounding the crane are two large lotus flowers and smaller buds and leaves. The lotus flower petals are translucent cream to grey with orange/brown web-like tendrils or veins. The crane's body is primarily cream to grey with redish pink incised details while the neck and beak are mottled redish pink. The elevated leg of the crane is pink and becomes translucent in the light. The base of the sculpture is primarily a deeper, opaque red with grey, cream, and charcoal highlights. The majority of the sculpture has a very fine texture with a slightly waxy feel, while the base, where it is deeper red, is more granular.
The sculpture is 16.5 X 16.5 X 5.4 cm and weighs 429 g.
The crane is an auspicious animal in Chinese culture and symbolises longevity and immortality. The lotus flower is also highly valued in Chinese culture and symbolizes purity, strength, and spiritual awakening.
This sculpture is from the estate of widely travelled gentleman who was an avid collector of fine quality objet d'art, including various Asian antiques. See more of my items for sale with this tag line to view other items from this art connoisseur's amazing collection.
