Chinese Cast Bronze Censer of Shoulao Seated on a Deer, Mid Qing Dynasty
About the Item
A gorgeous and elegant Chinese bronze incense burner cast as of Shoulao, the God of Longevity, portrayed seated on a deer. The Taoist deity is portrayed as an elderly man with a long beard and high, domed head. He wears the loose robes of a sage, and carries a scroll in one hand, said to contain the names and lifespan of every being. A symbol of longevity, the deer he rides has been rendered with incredible grace, portrayed walking, with long neck extended, a pair of separately cast antlers adorning its head.
The figure detaches from the back of the deer, revealing a chamber for sand and incense. When in use, the smoke would emanate from Shoulao's mouth. Each of the antlers also cast separately.
The bronze a wonderful deep reddish brown, with remnants of a lacquer coating. Also with nice areas of rubbing, especially to the shoulder of Shoulao.
