Contemporary Wooden Kimono Sculpture Carved in Japanese Elm by Toru Kaizawa

About the Item

This hand-carved wooden kimono sculpture is a contemporary piece of art made by award-winning artist Toru Kaizawa. Entitled “Hagi”, this piece was created in collaboration with SoShiro gallery for the Ainu collection. It celebrates the artistry of the indigenous Ainu people of the Japanese archipelago and their sacred relationship to forests and nature. Hagi, who was Kaizawa’s grandmother, designed, embroidered, and wore the original kimono this artwork is based on, highlighting both a visual, cultural, and personal history for the artist. Atni wood, an indigenous elm from the Nibutani region in Hokkaido, is carved with traditional techniques passed through the Kaizawa family. Notable details include the “fish scale” carving on the hands and feet, adding texture to the traditional clothing items such as the tekunpe hand coverings, and the chain-like belt, called a ‘tumus’, which is made from one single piece of wood. Through their collaboration, Toru Kaizawa and SoShiro found that creating or owning a piece of design can help preserve centuries-old craft traditions. This wooden kimono can be made as a bespoke commission.

  • Japanese Wooden Buddhist Sculpture of Amida Nyorai, 16th Century
    Located in Milano, IT
The Amitabha (Amida in Japanese) Buddha is shown standing with his hands forming the Amida raigo-in mudra. The face has a serene expression, with closed eyes under delicately arched brows and a severe face. The hair is arranged in rows of coils that also cover the "ushnisha", the protuberance on the head. The drapery is folded in elegant pleats falling from the shoulders to the feet. The antique sculpture is placed on a lotus flower which is located on a richly decorated base. Faith in Amida Buddha remained largely confined to a small segment of the Japanese population until the Kamakura Era (1185-1333) when it was popularized by new Pure Land sects committed to bringing Buddhism to the illiterate commoner. These sects expressed concern for the salvation of the ordinary person and stressed pure and simple faith over complicated rites and doctrines. Amida Nyorai...
