Gandharan Schist Stone Head of Buddha, 250 AD

About

A finely carved and well provenanced stone head of the buddha, from Gandhara, dating to the 3rd century AD.
Gandhara, the land of contrasts, nestled in the snowy peaks and lush valleys of the Hindu Kush, an ancient meeting place between east and west.
This piece shows the Buddha with oval face, heavy lidded eyes, the hair tied back and up in an ushnisha, a raised urna between the eyes. In contrast to the large number of forgeries one sees on the market, this genuine piece is confidently and expertly carved. A beautiful depiction.

Height: 7 1/4 inches. 10 1/2 inches as mounted. Provenance:
From the collection of Robert P. Griffin (1923 - 2015), acquired prior to 1983. Mr Griffin was a former Republican senator and congressman from Michigan, he played a key part in the Watergate scandal. Ex. Christie's, New York, December 1st 1983, lot 797. Subsequently in a French private collection and supplied with a French cultural property passport.
