Japanese Painted Bronze Okimono of a Gourd by Toyo, Showa Era, 1960s, Japan

About the Item

A charming Japanese decorative bronze sculpture, okimono, of a gourd, hyotan, by Toyo Japan, Showa Era, circa 1960s, Japan. The realistic okimono, fashioned as a calabash gourd, known as hyotan in Japan. The gourd portrayed in its drying state, turning a rich copper brown. The cut vine and leaves it is attached to are modeled realistically, with wilted and torn leaves, some with insect damage. The underside of the sculpture shows the leaves in their green and vibrant form. In Japanese culture, the hyotan is cherished not only for its taste and nutritional value, but also its cultural symbolism and significance. It is an attribute of sages and immortals, often serving as their drinking vessels. It is also a symbol of health and vitality, and personal success. The okimono is presented on a black lacquer stand of oval shape and raised on two bar feet. The underside of the stand with a Toyo Japan foil label.
