Korean Bronze Buddha- Large and very special early Buddha. Good Age

About the Item

6-9th Century Silla Dynasty style Korean Buddha-Looks to have a very good age, but not a period piece. Extremely large at 16.5 in tall. Superb face. Korean national treasure number 79 (from 709 A.D.) has the same form, including the shape of the base, the type of robes, and the bump on top of the head. That one is a classic extremely fine gilded bronze With an intricate back plate, so at first sight it looks quite different. It has a strong Ghandaran look to the robes- especially in the way they close around the neck. It is possible that it is a Silk Road piece that has combined elements of a number of cultures. My feeling is that it is the style suggests the 5/6thC, but the provincial sculpting, casting and relatively large size make it more likely to be quite a bit later. The condition is excellent for such a large early the only issue is that the bottom has collapsed in on itself on one side to some extent so that left to its own, it leans to one side. I had a custom base made that allows it to sit straight, as you can see in the photos. I did not believe it would be a good idea to try and correct this. While the underside looks quite solid and stable, I would not try and mess with it as it is probably brittle. In the end, it is the incredibly gentle, joy filled face, the very large size at 16.5 inches tall, and the extremely early styling for a Korean bronze figure that makes this such an extreme rarity for a Korean Bronze Sculpture. 18thC and possibly earlier. Very large and incredibly heavy Sri Lankan Kandy style (with echoes of much earlier styles). 9 3/4 inches tall (with no finial or base these would be 15+ inches), 11 1/2 inches on custom stand, almost 10 inches wide at knees. • 15th Century Japanese Bronze Baby Buddha, Large, Refined and Graceful-Special!
    Located in Ukiah, CA
Baby Buddha- represents the Buddha right after his birth pointing toward Heaven and Earth so they can witness his first steps. Twenty years ago I had a near identical Japanese Baby Buddha. This one has a finer patina and may be more finely cast, but is extremely similar in almost every way. It was made in the same workshop, probably by the same hand. Fortunately, the other one had an inscription on it (this one does not, but is almost certainly the same age as the other one plus or minus 30 years). The woman I mentored at the time was able to read Japanese- she translated the year to late 15th century Japan...

  • 15C Sri Lankan Divided Kingdom Period Standing Bronze/Other Alloy Buddha-Special
    Located in Ukiah, CA
15thC Sri Lankan Divided Kingdom Period Standing Bronze Buddha. Looks to have a high silver content in the alloy based on the sheen of the surface and the softness of the surface. Quite rare to find a figure from this period in this large size and high quality--the vast majority are the later Kandy style, which look similar but have rounder faces and distinctive ripples covering the robes. If you search the internet you will find very few of this type outside of museums or high end auction houses that are not just a few inches tall and quite provincial in casting. The size is an impressive 12 1/2 inches tall for the figure only and a total height on attached stand of 13.5 inches. It is extremely heavy for its size. Many Lankan Buddhas...
