About the Item

Life size 59 inch tall legendary saint Patrick garden sculpture - founder of Christianity In Ireland This is an extraordinary example of an antique American or Continental hand painted , hand cast sculpture remarkably still in its original condition exhibiting most substantial original hand painted colors of lichen green, amber, deep red, brown, and cream colors- all stable to its surface- good things that signifiy appropriate older age- just the way we like to find them. We have had professionally applied a quality satin clearcoat lacquer to preserve this valuable sculpture and stabilize its remaining hand painting. His unmistakable miter hat, iron cross pendant on chest, 13 inch detachable halo, and swimming serpants at his feet are just a handful of his iconic attributes. Saint Patrick's miter (hat) is a liturgical headdress worn by Roman Catholic bishops and some Anglican and Lutheran bishops- it has two shield-shaped stiffened halves that face the front and back with two fringed streamers or lappets, hanging from back. According to medieval narratives, he expelled the evil snakes from Ireland and helping to rid her of evil ways. Please enjoy and we hope you will visit St. Patrick's Statue effigy which stands in front of the venerable St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York Citry (last photo). What miracles did Saint Patrick perform? Patrick according to legend, miraculously drove all the snakes of Ireland into the sea cleansing Ireland of evil. He is said to have used the three leaflets of the shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity. About Saint Patrick- Patron Saint of Ireland Saint Patrick (Welsh: Padrig) was a fifth-century Romano-British Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland. Known as the "Apostle of Ireland", he is the primary patron saint of Ireland. Patrick is venerated as a Saint in the Catholic Church, in the Eastern Orthodox Church and regarded as a Saint by the Anglican Communion and the Lutheran Churche communities. Early medieval tradition regards him as the founder of Christianity in Ireland. According to story a young sixteen year old Patrick was captured by Irish pirates and taken as a slave to Ireland and later escaped returning to his family. After becoming a cleric, he returned to northern and western Ireland where he served as a bishop. By the seventh century, he had already come to be revered as the patron saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick's Day is observed on 17 March, the supposed date of his death. It is celebrated inside and outside Ireland as a religious and cultural holiday. In the dioceses of Ireland, it is both a solemn holy day and is also a celebration of Ireland itself. Provenance: Old New England garden collection Lifetime guarantee.

  • China Antique Qing Monumental Buddhist Stone Pagoda
    Located in South Burlington, VT
China antique monumental Pagoda Shrine with carved Lohans, 115" high, red sandstone, eight sections, Qing dynasty (1644-1911) This stone pagoda is a monumental work of art seldom seen in the west. Pagodas evolved from Indian stupas which were originally designed to hold the Buddha’s relics and textual paper sutras. This tiered tower composition became popular all over Asia and its architectural form differed from region to region. In China, its origins date to Buddhist missionaries who traveled the Silk Road. Early examples were built in temples but by the 13th century they were found outside the temple complex. Oldest examples had simple round or square bases and then later octagonal or more stylistic forms like the “censer” type of base on this pagoda. The 18 Arhats (lohans) portray Buddha’s messengers and each Lohan cylindrical tier is unique. This tour de force could serve as the centerpiece in the finest indoor space, or private or public Chinese or Asian inspired garden or Buddhist art collection. Photographs taken in natural light. Provenance: Private New England Collection acquired in 2005 in China from private collection Cheng Du, Sichuan Province. About Pagodas: Chinese pagoda towers...
