About the Item

Standing relief figure of a Buddha in samabhanga position. Meditative facial expression and typically elongated earlobes and small curls. Plain undergarment, hinted at along the neckline. The upper garment hinted at though a broad fold extending from the right arm to the hem – a characteristic motif of Sarnath Gupta art. Mounted on a black metal base (later). Height of the figure: c. 85 cm. Total height: ca. 113 cm. Condition: The stone figure is in good age related condition with usual signs of wear. Loss of material on the arms and the legs. The height of the figure measures c. 85 cm. Gupta Art The Gupta period in India (4th to 6th centuries) was a golden age when the arts – sculpture, painting, literature – as well as various sciences – astronomy and mathematics – flourished under royal patronage. Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh, where Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, was one of the most important creative centers at that time. The sculptures of this period were made from sandstone found close to Sarnath and display a great level of sensitivity, with much smoother elements as compared to Gandharan sculpture for example. With forms inspired by nature, such as eyebrows reminiscent of the curved leaves of the margosa or eyes shaped like lotus petals, Gupta art is characterized by restrained forms combined with a subtle and flawless execution. It thus represents the height of Indian art. Abhaya Mudra The abhaya mudra is also known as the gesture of fearlessness and granting protection. This hand position appears with many figures. It is formed by an outstretched arm and a raised hand. The fingertips are pointing skyward and the palm is facing the viewer. Sculpture was a part of Auctionata Selection in 2016.
