Thai Bronze Buddha Torso Fragment, Sukhothai, 15th/16th Century, Thailand

About the Item

An enigmatic and ephemeral Thai cast bronze fragment of a seated Buddha, Sukhothai Kingdom, circa 15th/16th century, Thailand. The fragment depicts the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni. The upper half of his torso, from the shoulders up, is missing, as is the right arm, and part of the platform. The Buddha sits upon a raised tripod pedestal in the half lotus position, his hands, performing bhumisparsha mudra, the gesture of "calling the Earth to witness". Bhumisparsha mudra is performed with the left hand resting in meditation in the lap, the right hand draped over the right knee, the impossibly long fingers reaching down to touch the ground in front. This gesture represents the pivotal moment the Buddha defeats the armies and temptations of the demon Mara and reaches enlightenment, known as Maravijaya. The Buddha is dressed in the robes of a monk, with his right shoulder bare, and a sash thrown over the left shoulder. His robes hug his body, outlining a robust and naturalistic figure, typical of Sukhothai images. The bronze with a wonderful mottled deep green patina. Some of the original gilding remains, especially to the right hand the back of the torso. Presented on a custom fitted black painted base. Height of sculpture only: 5.25"

Masterpiece 15th century Northern Thai bronze Buddha. This is the best of the best. Traces of gilding in the crevices of the hair, behind the ears, etcetera. The casting is crisp, the sculpting shows great finesse and depth, the patina is beautiful and complex and desirable, the proportions are classic, and the face as deep and serene and beautiful as any you will find on any Buddha. It is extremely large and is the largest high-end period bronze Buddha from Thailand I have ever had the pleasure of offering at 31 inches tall and in the range of 50 to 60 pounds (most of the clay core scooped out) (Outstanding provenance -from the personal collection of Ali A. Abssi (1934-2020) founder of the Ishtar gate...
