About the Item

A Rare and Unusual Pair of French Ormolu Dragon-Form Chenets, Louis XV Period, circa 1750. Each chenet is executed in the finest quality dore bronze, cast and chased in high relief, with elaborate scrolling bases that rise into sculptural dragon figures. The dragons are presented with raised heads and open jaws, their elongated necks extending outward, forming the dominant vertical element of the composition. Wings extend prominently from the sides of the torsos, detailed with feather-like incised lines, while the hindquarters curve into scrolling acanthus leaves that merge into the structure of the support. The bases are adorned with Rococo-style volutes, shells, and floral elements, unifying the organic flow of the forms with the dragon bodies. The surfaces display richly textured chasing, ranging from scaled skin and feathered wings to striated acanthus foliage, all highlighted by the fire-gilded finish. Ormolu chenets such as these were integral to French interior decoration of the 18th and early 19th centuries, serving both functional and ornamental purposes in fireplaces of the aristocracy and wealthy bourgeoisie. The Rococo period in France, especially under Louis XV, favored fantastical and naturalistic designs, often incorporating mythological or hybrid creatures. Dragons were a less common motif compared to classical figures or animals, lending these chenets a distinctive character within the broader production of the time. The craftsmanship of the pair demonstrates the technical mastery of French bronziers. The dragons’ heads are sharply modeled, with detailed snouts, eyes, and ears, while the wings and torsos exhibit chased details to enhance depth and texture. The scrolling supports are worked with fluted and ribbed surfaces, terminating in bold, curling feet with further vegetal motifs. The underside and rear of the figures reveal cast and hand-chased work, with iron support bars affixed for structural reinforcement in the fireplace. The fire-gilded ormolu finish retains its luster, emphasizing the raised surfaces while the recessed areas display subtle matte texturing. Together, these details illustrate the complexity of casting and chasing involved, as well as the careful application of gilding to produce a uniform yet lively surface across the elaborate design. France, Circa: 1750
