About the Item
A hardwood polychromed architectural finial from Belgium. Circa 1800, possibly earlier.
Intricately hand-carved and decorated in typical neo-gothic fashion, the outside is finished in gilt, and the inside still preserves the red pigment originally used.
The wooden octagonal base stem, in its natural wood texture, was used to securely insert the fixture in a column or staircase. It now rests on an elegant base stand made of sturdy black metal, measuring 4.5 inches wide by 4 inches deep.
