About the Item

This grand piece of moulding once framed an entrance or part of an ecclesiastical structure in a great church. Classical elements are seen in the rectangular dentil moulding and floral-form beading on the inner moulding. The piece is Italian and made mostly from pine wood, plaster and chalky paint. The paint and gold gilt is completely original. The piece would make an extraordinary addition to a modern home, as a built-in element, giant headboard or even as a leaning "ruin" in a corner. The great curved arc of the piece is the perfect and unexpected counterpoint to the modern perfection and squareness of most rooms. It can also be placed above a long bookcase or over a long set of doors.

A Solid Brass Fireplace Fender, c. 1880
Located in Chicago, IL
Constructed of a solid brass frame cast in parts and embossed with acanthus leaves. The central fender is flanked by stepped pedestals topped by solid brass lions connected by a central bar, also of solid brass. The overall design is neo-classical and dates to the Napoleon III period of the mid-to-late 19th Century. The piece appears to have been cleaned regularly, with only modest amounts of soot accumulating in the center directly in front of the firebox. The classical details are handsomely set off by unadorned surfaces, making this antique fireplace fender...

A Multi-Tiered Carving of a Lotus Flower 46"
Located in Chicago, IL
The lotus flower has been a symbol of spiritual purity and enlightenment ever since the time of the Buddha. These wooden lotus flowers are meticulous reproductions of ceiling decorations found in Thai temples. In some temples, lotuses are painted directly on the ceiling. In other temples, they're elaborately carved, covered in gold and placed in the center of ceiling panels. Either way, their purpose is the same -to draw the eye of the worshiper toward heaven. . According to a Zen verse, “may we exist in muddy water with purity, like a lotus." The lotus grows out of the mud, rising upward to bloom in the sunlight, clean and perfect. These lotuses are hand-carved from wood and finished by artisans in Chiang Mai, Thailand, according to ancient designs. Shown here: a large multi-tiered lotus with an antique wood finish.
