Large African Antique Mounted Dogon Toguna Post or Sculpture

About the Item

A substantial and large hand-carved wood antique Dogon Y-shaped post, from Mali, Africa featuring large voluptuous breasts above a geometric Kanaga mask symbolizing the creation of the world, danced during funeral ceremonies. This Toguna post which means "great shelter" was one of many that supported a low open structure with a thatched roof used as a community meeting place for men. These posts pay homage to the proliferation of the Dogon people by incorporating mostly fertility motifs in their design. This striking sculptural architectural element with a beautiful patina mounted on a black iron base is simultaneously simple yet modern and would be a chic addition to any home incorporating a variety of styles including Contemporary, Danish, Bohemian and Organic Modern.
