Large Circa 1850 Italian Giltwood Architectural Carving or Headboard 91.5 Inches
About the Item
Hand-carved in Italy circa 1850, this very large giltwood architectural was finished using a process known as meccatura, which involves covering the silver gilding with a gold varnish. Time and wear to the gilding (which is normal for a piece of this age) has given the carving a splendid hue of both gold and silver.
Over seven and a half feet long, the architectural is a flowing display of flowers, curled leaves, and crinkled ribbons. A large bouquet emanates from each of the two rosettes seen at the bottom of the carving. The flower bunches rise up and curl inwards, with each grouping terminating inside a volute whorl which serves as the center of a large, curled leaf margent that also coils towards the center. Both curled leaves transition seamlessly into an elaborate crinkled ribbon with a knotted ball at the apex of the architectural. Additional floral groupings bridge open space between the ribbon and the curled leaves. Two more crinkled ribbons are wrapped around the bouquets near the rosettes, meandering beneath another pair of curled leaf volutes.
A beautiful carving, full of movement, this giltwood architectural most likely adorned the wall of a stately Italian villa during the 19th century. Today, it would also make a fascinating headboard for a larger bed, such as a king of California king.

Large Period Louis XVI French Painted Overdoor or Headboard, circa 1790
Located in Dallas, TX
Originally an overdoor from a boiserie room at a French chateau, this large architectural was hand-carved during the Louis XVI period, circa 1790. The overdoor is roughly rectangular, with the exception of the stepped bottom molding, which would have been necessary to fit over the door frame.
In the center of the overdoor is a classical urn adorned with imbricated disks and gadrooning and topped with a pinecone finial. The vessel is surrounded by an ovate border embellished with bead and reel, an oval floret, scrolls, and foliage. Two bundled leaf swags emanate from the top of the medallion, flowing in opposite directions, with crinkled ribbon loosely twirled around the greenery. An additional crinkled ribbon is wrapped around the garland just before the swag feeds through a hoop and turns downwards.
Prominent molding with several thick layers surrounds the low-relief carvings, providing a nice border to the architectural panel. The wood has been painted a grayish-green color, sometimes referred to as “French gray”, which is a very neutral color that can be paired with many interior color palettes. Our Louis XVI painted overdoor...

Period Gothic Oak Trunk or Chest Façade from Picardie France, circa 1550
Located in Dallas, TX
Often when centuries-old trunks did not survive the passage of time, 19th-century menuisiers (French woodworkers) would salvage the surviving wood and carve new furniture such as desks and similar trunks. The facade was typically the most ornate section of these antique trunks, making intact frontages highly valued antiques. Hand-carved from oak in Picardie, France, circa 1550, this period Gothic architectural is a beautiful example of an antique trunk facade that was not incorporated into a more recent furnishing. Picardie is a former administrative region in northern France that is home to many Gothic cathedrals. The Amiens Cathedral (mid-13th century) is the largest standing cathedral in Europe and is truly a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.
Our trunk frontage has five vertically oriented inset panels embellished with various forms of Gothic tracery, including high-arching niches...

15th or 16th Century Marble Gargoyle Fountain Spout from Arezzo, Italy
Located in Dallas, TX
Although when most people hear the word “gargoyle”, they probably envision small, winged creatures with grotesque visages. However, the phrase has a deeper meaning, encompassing any carved head (animal or human) that function as waterspouts.
From the Early Renaissance (late 1400’s/early 1500’s), our gargoyle fountain spout features a human-like face with pointed ears, possibly representing a centaur or a satyr. The roughly rectangular block of marble was hand-carved in Arezzo, in the Tuscany region of Italy. All sides except the front of the cream-colored stone have a sawed finish, resulting in a rough texture. The back has been excavated, adding to the character of the gargoyle. A 1 ½” diameter hole has been cut all the way through, forming an open mouth of the gargoyle. The gaping mouth was often a symbol used to conjure images of devouring giants and used to remind people that they are susceptible to certain forces.
