Circa 1750 Carved and Gilded Altar Candelabra from Tuscany, Italy 73 inches Long

About the Item

Hand-carved in Tuscany, Italy, circa 1750, this gilded altar candelabra has a commanding presence. At over six feet long, the candelabra is full of movement inspired by nature. The centerpiece of the candelabra is a carving of a wicker basket suspended above a foliate swag, adorned with volute offshoots. A pair of foliate rinceaux flank the basket, each topped by two scalloped bobeches surrounding a small vessel enveloped in lanceolate leaves. The final touches to the grouping is a pair of scrolled urns with a console façade. All carvings are gilded and rest atop a two-inch-thick plinth with a quarter-round gilt molding and a mottled brown and green top with a darkened patina. A beautiful Tuscan giltwood altar candelabra that would accentuate any room it is displayed in, such as on a long table of dining room or above a fireplace mantel.
