About

A stunning pair of Indian sandstone jali panels, carved, undercut, and pierced in a fish scale pattern.
Each panel carved from a single slab of sandstone. The scales carved in an overlapping pattern, each scale with an incised line following the curve of the scale, all within an integral frame.
The fish scale pattern can be found on jali screens that decorate the Man mandir Palace at Gwalior Fort in Madhya Pradesh.
These screens with an attractive patina and moss growth. The frames were drilled at one point and show signs of having been mounted.
Jali are traditional Indian window or door screens. The pierced design serving both an aesthetic and practical purpose. The beautifully carved screens allow light in, creating gorgeous shadows as well. They also act as a form of rudimentary air conditioning, forcing air through the holes, which cools the air, and creates a slight breeze.
