Door knockers are more popular in Europe, mostly in England than in any other country and can be found everywhere, even in the most remote locations.Below is the history of the door knockers.
Door knockers have a long history and have been used in various cultures throughout the centuries. The exact origins of door knockers are challenging to trace, but they are believed to date back to ancient civilizations. Here's a brief overview of the history of door knockers:
1) Ancient Greece and Rome: The use of door knockers can be traced back to ancient Greece and Rome. In these civilizations, wealthy homes often had ornate metal door knockers that served both a functional and decorative purpose. These early knockers were often shaped like mythological creatures or had symbolic designs.
2) Medieval Europe: Door knockers became more prevalent in medieval Europe. During this time, they were often made of iron or brass and took on various shapes, such as animals, grotesque faces, or religious symbols. The design and material used for door knockers often indicated the status and wealth of the homeowner.
3) 17th to 19th Centuries: Door knockers continued to evolve in design and popularity during the 17th to 19th centuries. In England, for example, there was a surge in the use of decorative knockers during the Georgian and Victorian eras. Many of these designs were elaborate and reflected the fashion and artistic trends of the time.
4) Colonial America: As European settlers moved to the Americas, they brought with them the tradition of using door knockers. In colonial America, door knockers were often simpler in design, reflecting the more utilitarian style of the period.
5) 19th Century Revival: The 19th century saw a revival of interest in historical styles, including the Gothic and Renaissance periods. This influenced door knocker designs, with many reproductions and new creations inspired by earlier styles.
6) 20th Century and Beyond: In the 20th century, door knockers continued to be used, though their popularity waned with the advent of electric doorbells. However, in recent years, there has been a renewed interest in traditional and vintage design elements...

Surrealist design Rinocerontico door handle by Salvador Dalí polished cast brass
By Salvador Dalí
Located in Barcelona, ES
Three polished lacquered cast bronze pieces joined together.
During the ‘thirties in Paris, Salvador Dalí surrounded himself with a circle of friends involved in the application of art to varied disciplines, above and beyond the study of pure pictorial art. Jean-Michel Frank, a furniture maker and decorator of recognized prestige in the Paris of those years, was on very good terms with Dalí and together they worked on several ideas. The Bracelli lamp which we present here is a classic design after Jean-Michel’s manner of designing and working, adopted by Dalí for his house at Portlligat.
Amongst Dalí ’s specific furnishing projects, and constituting another for his curriculum vitae as a designer, may be counted the garden furnishings for his Portlligat house, the complete architecture of the Night Club (garotte-shaped) for the Hotel Presidente in Acapulco (1957) and another project for a bar in California in the ‘forties. As shown by the small selection now produced and included in this catalogue, Dalí ’s work was not restrictes to the traditional furnishing elements, but included tap fittings, handles, door-pulls, printed fabrics and objets of indeterminate use.
In the 1990s a group of experts, led by Oscar Tusquets, set themselves the task of turning the furniture Dalí had drawn for Jean-Michel Frank into reality. Amongst these items were the Leda chair...

Polished Solid Brass Batlló Door Handle by Antoni Gaudi - Set of 2
By Antoni Gaudí
Located in Barcelona, ES
Solid cast brass with polished finish.
A company that has always attributed such great importance to the author of the designs could never forget the great figures in history. That is why the BD catalogue of contemporary creations has always included those by admired classical masters. Antoni Gaudí (1852/1926) is, without doubt, the most internationally well-known Spanish architect. But is not only his buildings and brilliant architectural solutions that have travelled the globe. His integrated conception of architecture led him to pay attention, not only to structural calculations, but also to all the decorative elements, including furniture, that would form part of the building. The admiration felt by modern designers for the furniture designed by Gaudí has not gone unnoticed by BD which was the first company to rescue them from history by embarking on their serial production using...

An antique English oak plank door dating back to the 1600s suitable for interior or exterior use. Brimming with character, this reclaimed door tells the story of 17th century craftsmanship.
