Pair of Antique French Carved Wood and Iron Doors, Circa 1880

About the Item

Featuring exceptional low-relief carvings paired with equally impressive ironwork, these French doors date to 1880. The asymmetrical windows, which are surrounded by very thick molding, are filled with iron bars terminating in pointed barbs and surmounted by a pair of concentric roundels around a quatrefoil set in the center of the slats. Both windows are topped by a large volute leaf, while the left door has a vertical mullion adorned with floral margents, a rosette, and a leaf cup finial. A geometric baluster-form iron handle can be seen under the window, rising from a shaped entablature adorned with three tassels on each side. Beneath the handle is a tas de sable carvings encircled by several layers of molding. At the base of each door is a fluted kickplate set within a rectangular border. Most of the original hardware is still present, including large door straps and a locking bolt seen on the back of the doors. The right door has a charming knocker in the form of a fist gripping a ball. At over eight feet tall, our carved wood and iron doors would make fantastic interior doors to a wine room or salon.

  • Pair of Circa 1750 Walnut Wood Entry Doors from Spain
    Located in Dallas, TX
Spanish furniture and architecturals of the 18th century, such as this pair of walnut wood entry doors, were highly influenced by French stylings. Hand-carved circa 1750, the doors feature deep, sinuous moldings, reminiscent of the curvaceous motifs seen during the reign of Louis XV. The amazing doors have a rich brown patina that accentuates the charm of the carvings, which are also enhanced by the visible screws used to join the pieces of walnut wood. Comprised of five carved panels per door, each carving is similar: a rough rectangle with rounded ends and barbed counter curves. The three smaller panels are orientated horizontally, surrounding the two larger and vertically arranged panels. A thickly scrolled bronze pull can be seen on each door, also functioning as door knockers (the door on the right has commensurate wear from the pull striking the wood). Because these Spanish entry doors...
