About the Item

A charming and atmospheric 19th-century English tole coal bin or scuttle, beautifully decorated in the chinoiserie style, with hand-painted gilt figures in a landscape on a black ground. The front panel features two robed figures in an exotic garden setting, flanked by foliage, bamboo, and scrolling floral ornamentation, all rendered in warm gold tones. The sloped, hinged lid is painted with a serene scene of birds in flight and landscape elements including a distant mountain—an evocative interior detail that speaks to the care given to both form and function. Detail Description – Underside Lid: The curved inner lid is hand-painted in a Chinoiserie landscape, set against a dark black lacquer ground with visible craquelure and age-related surface patina. At the left, a pair of elegantly rendered cranes stand in shallow water amid reeds and flowering plants. Their bodies are painted in pale tones with detailed plumage and vivid red beaks and feet, offering a lively contrast to the black ground. Above them, two flying cranes or herons are shown in motion, their wings extended mid-flight, soaring against a cloudy, golden-hued sky. To the right, the composition features a mountainous landscape—a stylized peak with green foothills and a golden river or path winding through the foreground. Delicate brushwork throughout depicts grasses, foliage, and rippling water, while the curved upper edge is subtly trimmed with a fine gold border. This interior vignette—intended to be seen only when the lid is opened—speaks to the thoughtful artistry of the maker and to the Victorian fascination with exotic landscapes. The presence of interior painting on tole is relatively rare and often signals a higher-end or custom commission piece. Originally used for storing coal by the hearth, this piece now lends itself beautifully as a decorative storage bin, side table, or sculptural accent. Its strong silhouette and dramatic surface patina make it equally suited to traditional, eclectic, or maximalist interiors. Dimensions: Height: 24 in. (61 cm) Width: 20 in. (50.8 cm) Depth: 16 in. (40.6 cm) Condition: Good antique condition with surface wear, scattered losses, oxidation, and age-related patina consistent with use and material. The hand-painted chinoiserie retains strong visual presence. Hinged lid operates smoothly.
