About the Item

This antique English coal scuttle dates to the late 19th century and exemplifies Victorian tole-ware craftsmanship. Constructed from black-painted metal, the bin features a sloped trapezoidal form with an operable hinged lid, accented by a finely cast brass panel depicting a bird among foliage, an elegant naturalist motif typical of the Aesthetic Movement. The decorative brass hinges and domed handle add warmth and contrast to the dark enamel finish, while a small ceramic knob allows for easy lid access. Inside, the bin retains its original fitted liner and side brackets for lifting, though expected signs of age and use are present, including little oxidation and wear to the interior base. The scuttle sits on four small raised feet, allowing for air circulation when placed near a hearth. Originally intended for storing coal or kindling, this charming piece now serves beautifully as a decorative accent or functional storage in a fireside setting or country house interior. This elegant, hand painted antique sewing table was created in England circa 1880. Standing on a rectangular base with scalloped edges over a thick carved central stem, the cabinet built of "Papier-Mache", has a black lacquered finish embellished with mother of pearl inlays, floral motifs and gilt decor. The vintage box with raised surface is dressed with a scalloped apron around; when opened from the top, it reveals inside luxurious green velvet upholstery, and would be ideal for storing craft and sewing tools, or other small accessories.
