About the Item

Large and impressive pair of 19th century Louis XIV style gilt bronze andirons. A festive fire is one of the great pleasures of winter and the warm glow of firelight on the fine French gilt bronze of these magnificent andirons will transform any room. Each composed of a circular reeded plinth topped with a handsome urn shaped finial and resting on a superb scrolled base with a central sea shell motif, acanthus leaf sides and beautifully modelled pomegranite form feet. Acorn shaped log stops. Original gilding, fine details of the decorative elements and substantial original log supports. Height: 23.5 inches Width: 10 inches Depth: 25.5 inches (from the fron of the andiron to the back of the log holder) Weight: approximately 45 lbs. Louis XIV style or Louis Quatorze, the official style during the reign of Louis XIV (1643–1715), is most closely associated with Versailles. It features grand proportions, harmonious design elements and was highly influential on the architectural development of some of the greatest cities of Europe, certainly Paris. Francois Mansart, Louis Le Vau, Jules Hardouin-Mansart and Andre Charles Boulle are some of the notable names connected with this period.
