About the Item

A very pleasing example of a 19th century Regency style polished steel fire grate basket. The high shaped Cast Iron fire back depicting Bacchus-the Roman god of wine, vegetation, pleasure & festivity. He is shown amongst grapevine, ivy and bindweed carrying a waist level quiver (he unstrung his vanquished bow, to leave just arrows) in his left hand he carries a pine cone staff, this was a period before he took his place at Olympus, Bacchus wandered the world for many years teaching others to grow vines. Below, a set of three polished serpentine fire bars connecting to square post standards topped by tall urn finials, flanked in turn by shaped and etched polished wings. Directly beneath is a large polished serpentine shaped pierced apron displaying five protruding oval flower Paterae, with a line of repeating ball beading, the whole supported by tapered legs with acanthus leaf decoration to the under skirt, topped by larger matching urn finials. English, 1850c (Cast Iron back earlier).
