About the Item

This is a large impressive and profusely carved solid mahogany chimney piece in the neo-Gothic style of A. W. N Pugin, dating from the early 20th century. It has a contoured shelf over Puginesque foliate carved decoration with an open clover leaf foliate frieze below. The chimney piece is supported on a closed multi clover leaf column with ancient Greek carved capitals above. This is a superb hand carved highly decorative solid mahogany fire surround in timeless neo-Gothic style which will enhance any room in which it is placed. Condition: In excellent condition having been beautifully restored in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 156 x width 217 x depth 33. Dimensions in inches: Height 5 feet, 1 inch x width 7 feet, 1 inch x depth 1 foot, 1 inch. Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. (1 March 1812 – 14 September 1852) was an English architect, designer, artist and critic, chiefly remembered for his pioneering role in the Gothic Revival style; his work culminated in the interior design of the Palace of Westminster. Pugin designed many churches in England, and some in Ireland and Australia. Pugin was the son of Auguste Pugin, and the father of E.W. and Peter Paul Pugin, who continued his architectural firm as Pugin & Pugin. Mahogany is probably one of the largest ‘families’ of hardwood, having many different varieties within its own species. Mahogany has been used for centuries in ship building, house building, furniture making etc and is the core structure of just about every 19th century vanity box, dressing case or jewellery box. It became more of a Victorian trend to dress mahogany with these decorative veneers, such as rosewood, kingwood, burr walnut and coromandel, so that the actual mahogany was almost hidden from view. Mahogany itself is a rich reddish brown wood that can range from being plain in appearance to something that is so vibrant, figured and almost three dimensional in effect. Although mahogany was most often used in its solid form, it also provided some beautifully figured varieties of veneer like ‘Flame’ mahogany and ‘Fiddleback’ mahogany (named after its preferred use in the manufacture of fine musical instruments). Cuban mahogany was so sought after, that by the late 1850′s, this particular variety became all but extinct.
